In January this year, I began as the Assistant Chaplain at Launceston Church Grammar School. Just these six months alone (and many before that) are a testimony to the kindness of God who is strong in our weaknesses and steadfast in every circumstance.
Having had the privilege to do some theological study soon after finishing school, I was convinced that we have a God who loves us and deserves to be known amongst all nations. I thought, perhaps, God might have a path for me in cross-cultural mission. As I completed my teaching qualifications, a number of circumstances came up that blocked that path, for now.
I also had the opportunity to work for Quiz Worx during my time as a uni student – ‘sharing Jesus with kids everywhere’ through performing creative live shows for kids, especially in schools. Not only were there a range of practical skills that God gave me through those years, but also a taste of Christian ministry. Some incredibly patient women and men mentored and supported me, whilst demonstrating what it is to serve faithfully in vocational ministry.
I soon began my teaching career in a public primary school in western Sydney, where God grew a passion in me for supporting students in the twists and turns of life. That experience was extremely formative. I was blessed to be surrounded by people who showed me what it is to bring compassion, stability and consistency to classroom settings that were full of the complexities of life. I often found myself, however, desperate for people to know the one who could truly set them free (John 8:36).
Having moved to Tasmania in mid-2025, I began to hear about Grammar through a friend (another kindness of God). He and others helped me to see the immense opportunities and exciting direction of the school. In God’s wisdom, it seemed as though he had used a range of people, experiences, ups and downs to prepare me for this role. Six months in, it continues to seem that way.
I have been extremely grateful for the warm welcome to the Grammar community and the support from day one – something I do not take for granted. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know staff and students, as well as figuring out what chaplaincy looks like in this context. Whilst I am incredibly passionate about the ‘content’ that I have the privilege of teaching (in Christian Studies, Chapel, etc.), I am acutely aware that my character and ‘presence’ in the ups and downs of life are crucial.
Moving forward, I hope, under God, to grow in these attributes (2 Peter 1:5-7), to be a consistent ambassador for Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20) and to share the One who can set us “free indeed” (John 8:36).
Caleb was blessed to grow up in Orange, NSW, in a family that taught him of Jesus’ love. He moved to Sydney to complete a Diploma of Theology, followed by a Bachelor of Education. Caleb began teaching at a public primary school in Western Sydney before moving to Tasmania to continue teaching. In January 2026, he commenced as the Assistant Chaplain at Launceston Church Grammar School. Caleb is married to Alana and he enjoys time spent with God, time spent with Alana and time spent outdoors.
